TLC @ Bedford

A radical rethink of a dark and under-utilised space in Bedford library
The Learning Cafe @ Bedford Library is one of three libraries at Royal Holloway, University of London. Our design for the project is informed by fieldwork carried out in the summer of 2008 and a unique participatory design process during which we consulted students via a Facebook site. Some 245 students joined the group and provided us with invaluable feedback and inspiration. Our findings demonstrated that the space was dark, difficult to penetrate and underused by students. Our design opened out the entrance with a new glazed screen, set up clear sight lines and vistas of the surrounding landscape, streamlined staff spaces and provided a wide variety of new group working spaces.
